If you are an artist, musician, writer or creative professional who wants to talk about your process and promote your work through a blog but you don't know how, then this one-day course will teach you everything you need to know to get started. Participants will develop a blog using Blogger--Google's free blogging program--and will choose a design for their blog, create a blog post that includes text, photos, video and sound, and will learn how to promote their blog via social media. Artist and professional blogger, Philip Hartigan, will also share with participants his ten tips for successful blogging. Faculty Philip Hartigan Instructor of Visual Arts and Creative Writing, College of Creative Arts Schedule Supplies Participants must have basic computer skills and may choose to work from their own laptop computer or work from a Mac laptop computer supplied for them during the workshop. Please note that if you are bringing your own laptop, for optimum operation, participants must have Windows 7 or Mac OSX 10.8 or higher for their operating system and must have the latest version of Google Chrome, which will be used for our web browser. Participants will be given instructions on how to register for their Blogger account in advance of the class. An IT Mac specialist will be on hand at the start of the course to provide basic support. Students should also create a gmail account prior to the start of the workshop. Instructions can be found below: How to create a Gmail address Go to www.gmail.com. Click the CREATE AN ACCOUNT button. The Create Your Google Account page is displayed. Enter your first and last name. Enter a username. This can be the same as your real name, or an invented name. It’s possible that the name you type has already been taken. If this happens, keep typing different variations until you find one that isn’t already taken (I know that at least 6 people have variations of “Philip Hartigan” already!) Create a password. Your Password is very important and you should use something only you could know. Here are some suggestions on how to create a Gmail account with a strong password: Choose something with a large number of characters, not only numbers and letters but symbols too. Do not use your name, your spouse’s name, or your birthday because these are the first things a hacker will try. In the Confirm your password box, retype your password. At this point, write it down so that you have a record if you forget it later. Enter your Gender. You don’t have to enter your mobile phone number, but if you don’t, you will have to complete the Prove you’re not a robot box by entering the text you see displayed there. If you can’t read the text Google wants you to type, click the Reload symbol (the circular arrow) to display a different code. The Location box should automatically say United States. If it doesn’t, select your location from the list. Check the box next to the Privacy and Terms of Service text to indicate that you agree. Click the Next button. The Welcome User message is displayed, indicating that you have created your Gmail address, and suggesting what you can do with your new account, like signing in to YouTube and subscribing to different channels. Click Continue to Gmail. You will be redirected to your new email address account, where a Tutorial is available to help you get accustomed to the Gmail design and functions.
