Join fiber artist Rita Petteys for a 2-day workshop and learn a variety of techniques for dyeing cotton fabric and other cellulose fibers (linen, bamboo, jute and hemp) to create unique designs. Immersion dyeing of fabrics, low-water immersion techniques, dyeing a gradation of color (your choice) and some folding/pleating/stitches/dyeing techniques will all be explored. By the end of the workshop you will know how to dye fabrics, measure and mix dyes in amounts appropriate for the material weights, and how to rinse and dry your fabrics. You will also understand various ways to experiment with new techniques to develop your own style and will leave with at least 5 yards of colorfully dyed fabric! No previous experience required. Faculty Rita Petteys Instructor of Visual Arts, Interlochen College of Creative Arts Schedule Supplies A materials fee of $20, included as a part of the registration fee, provides the following: At least five yards of fabric over the course of the class. Handouts, dyes and chemicals used in class, and use of the materials A bibliography, and access to any on-line materials developed for the class Students Please Bring: clamps and resists/stencils to create patterns on fabrics a bowl or basin to transport wet materials string for tying fabric, wood blocks, etc. This class is messy, so please wear old clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting dirty/stained. Students should also bring an apron, rubber gloves for hand protection, and a dust mask to wear while measuring dye powder.
