Concurrent Class Sessions: Writing House

The Basics (for beginners) Session I with DeeDee Tibbits
Dive in and submerge yourself in this beautiful folk instrument. Learn strumming techniques, hand positioning, and finger strengthening techniques, all while learning some good ol' mountain tunes like Sally Goodin', Old Joe Clark, and Remus. This will be in the Mixolydian tuning: D-A-D.

Enhancing the Basics Session I with Wanda Degen
Learn a Medieval tune incorporating three techniques: flat picking, the traditional droning strum and the rhythmic stopping of the strings known as the slap. This will be in the minor, Aeolian tuning, D-A-C. While there, learn The Edmund Fitzgerald playing the melody and accompaniment chords. Then, going back to D-A-D tuning, you'll learn chords for some folk songs in the key of G and D, exploring some music theory.

Noon - 1:30 p.m.
Lunch Break

Concurrent Class Sessions: Writing House

The Basics (for beginners) Session II with Wanda Degen
There's more than one way to tune the mountain dulcimer and in this session you'll explore two more tunings while reinforcing strumming techniques from Session I. Keeping it simple, first you'll learn the major, Ionian scale, then the minor, Aeolian scale. Add a few more songs to your repertoire including For the Beauty of the Earth and Shady Grove.

Enhancing the Basics Session II with DeeDee Tibbits
Further diverge into more fun techniques and embellishments on the mountain dulcimer. Explore hammer-ons, harmony drones, and finger picking, all while learning several tunes like Spotted Pony, Amazing Grace and Clinch Mt. Backstep. In the Mixolydian tuning: D-A-D.

2:45 - 3 p.m.
Break

3 - 4:15 p.m.
Duets with DeeDee and Wanda: Mallory-Towsley Great Room

The full group meets for a question and answer session followed by a couple of simple duets demonstrated by the instructors. Participants will then pair up, or form ensembles, to practice playing duets together - or any of the other tunes learned at the earlier sessions. Those who prefer can use this time to work on the material on their own. The instructors will be on hand for help and encouragement.

4:15 - 5 p.m.
Closing Session: Mallory-Towsley Great Room

Acoustic Open-Mic (without the mic!): An opportunity for participants who wish to share a song or two in the traditional round-robin format. Solo or ensembles are welcome!

Please note that this schedule may be subject to change. Participants will be notified of any adjustments.
