2014 Beginning Drawing Schedule

Monday, June 2

8:30 - 9 a.m.
Registration Check-In: Mallory-Towsley Center Lobby

9 - 10:30 a.m.
Class Session 1: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
Short presentation of instructor’s work as an illustrator and draftsman which will lead to an introduction to drawing and discussion of elements of design, basic skills and detail technique, including a review of (or introduction to) basic 1 and 2 point perspective and qualities of line, tone, and value in drawing objects. Demonstrations and basic exercises on paper will be conducted.

10:30 - 10:45 a.m.
Break

10:45 a.m. - Noon
Class Session 2: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
Demonstration and sketching begins from a still life of cones, spheres, and rectangles to practice skills of line, volume and shading. Participants will apply general principles of perspective learned earlier.

Noon - 1:30 p.m.
Lunch Break

1:30 - 3 p.m.
Class Session 3: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
In-studio still life session. Drawings will use the techniques covered in the morning sessions.

3 - 3:30 p.m.
Class Session 4: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
Critique of first drawings. Group discussion of problems and solutions encountered.

3:30 - 3:45 p.m.
Break

3:45 - 5 p.m.
Class Session 5: Location TBA
Class is free to work on second still life or walk campus to sketch buildings and landscapes.

5 - 6:30 p.m.
Dinner Break

6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Class Session 6: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
Group discussion of afternoon work. Comparsions to morning work will be discussed.

Tuesday, June 3

9 - 10:30 a.m.
Class Session 7: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
Introduction to ink: line, shading techniques (cross hatching, stippling, “scribble” and combos. Also introduction to wet media as it applies to ink washes.

10:30 - 10:45 a.m.
Break

10:45 a.m. - Noon
Class Session 8: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
Macro drawings. Detailed enlarged drawings of small found objects utilizing ink techniques from the morning.

Noon - 1:30 p.m.
Lunch Break

1:30 - 3 p.m.
Class Session 9: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
In class still life or exterior landscapes. How to create your own language of techniques.

3 - 3:15 p.m.
Break

3:15 - 5 p.m.
Class Session 10: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108
Continuation of earlier session. (Detail takes time!)

3:30 - 3:45 p.m.
Break

3:45 - 5 p.m.
Class Session 11: Location TBA

Feedback and group critique session.
