Monday, July 20, 2015 Registration Fee: $75 Learn how to knit and purl while making a hat and scarf in this 6-hour introductory-level class taught by nationally known knitting instructor, Sarah Peasley. Discussions regarding knitting needles, yarns, notions and gauge will introduce students to the world of knitting, while students learn the practice of both the English and Continental knitting styles (holding the yarn in either your right or left hand). Participants will also work both flat and in the round, learn to cast on, bind off, decrease, make buttonholes, pick up stitches, and weave in ends. Known for her patience and humor, the relevance and detail of her class notes, and her ability to instill confidence in her students, Sarah will provide all participants with a wide range of lasing skills. This class is intended for beginners, or those who are looking to refresh their skills. Please see the supplies tab for a list of materials to bring to the workshop. Topics: Knit-on cast-on and knitting back and forth. Sampling both English and Continental knitting styles. Discussion of stitch anatomy and stitch patterns. 10:30 - 10:45 a.m.Break 10:45 a.m. - NoonClass Session 2: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108Complete band and begin body of hat. Topics: Circular knitting. Discussion of yarn, needle types, and notions. Noon - 1:30 p.m.Lunch break 1:30 - 3 p.m.Class Session 3: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108Hat shaping and button tab. Cast on and begin knitting scarf. Long-tail cast-on and knit/purl stitch pattern. Weaving in ends. Supplies Beginning Knitting Supply List Students participating in the Dye Your Own Yarn course on July 13 may use the yarns they have dyed in that course for Beginning Knitting. Supplies needed: Yarn #1 – 200 gms smooth bulky-weight yarn (3.5 to 4 stitches/inch). Color: Variegated or multicolored; not too dark – you want to be able to see your stitches. Fiber: Wool or a wool blend would be best – something that you'll enjoy knitting with. Yarn #2 – 100 gms smooth bulky-weight yarn. Color: Solid, to go with Yarn #1. Fiber: Similar to Yarn #1. Needle #1 – US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needle. Length: Between 24 and 36 inches long (measured from tip to tip). Needle #2 – US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needle. Length: Must be 16 inches long (measured from tip to tip).
