Learn about character design and development, visual plot development, and how to describe the environment and atmosphere to evoke emotion. 35-year career veteran, Barbara Hranilovich will walk participants through the steps from thumbnail sketches to at least one finished spread or cover image and will share with participants some basics about working with publishers. All skill levels welcome, however some drawing experience is required. Please see the supply list tab for a list of materials to bring to the workshop. Discuss how to make a book flow by approach to imagery. 10:30 - 10:45 a.m.Break 10:45 a.m. - NoonClass Session 2: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Introduction of participants and their stories and goals to help strategize approaches. Tuesday, June 9 9 - 10:30 a.m.Class Session 5: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Show and discuss thumbnails to hone and finalize. Choose most apt page or spread to take to finished art. 10:30 - 10:45 a.m.Break 10:45 a.m. - NoonClass Session 6: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Begin tighter sketch of chosen image. Noon - 1 p.m.Lunch Break 1 - 3 p.m.Class Session 7: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Finish tightened sketches and review. 3 - 3:15 p.m.Break 3:15 - 5 p.m.Class Session 8: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Transfer image to substrate to begin finished art. Begin finished art if ready. 5 - 5:30 p.m.Clean-upMay continue finished art and/or clean up. 5:30 p.m.Dinner Break 7 - 8:30 p.m.Optional Session: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108Share a favorite book and explain why it works based on what’s been learned. Wednesday, June 10 9 - 10:30 a.m.Class Session 9: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Work on finished art with ongoing tips on painting. 10:30 - 10:45 a.m.Break 10:45 a.m. – NoonClass Session 10: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Continue work on finished art. If complete, may begin a second image. Noon - 1 p.m.Lunch Break 1 - 3 p.m.Class Session 11: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Review finished art in progress for final chance to tweak. 3 - 3:15 p.m. Break 3:15 - 5 p.m.Class Session 12: Mallory-Towsley Classroom 108 Finish images if possible. 5 - 5:30 p.m.Class Conclusion, Critiques and Feedback Please note that this schedule may be subject to change. Supplies Children's Book Illustration Supply List Your choice of drawing pad / sketching paper Your preferred sketching tools (pencils, charcoal, pens, etc.) Eraser Ruler Triangle Draft children’s manuscript (does not need to be typewritten) Reference materials for characters and/or the environment Your preferred materials and tools for for completing finished art works. Recommended materials include media that can dry quickly and be transported easily such as gouache, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils and/or materials for collage. Please also bring any size substrate you feel comfortable using with this media.
