Poetry, Prose and Paint Workshop

Program Overview

Discover the dynamic interplay that fuels both painting and writing. The disciplines of painting and writing both rely upon close observation, experimentation and constant revision.

Many writers, including Henry Miller and Elizabeth Bishop, have turned to painting as a source of inspiration and expression. Similarly, many painters including Paul Klee and Fairfield Porter turned to writing.  Painter, writer and teacher, Duncan Sprattmoran, will present a series of cross-pollinations where participants will share literary and visual works in facilitated discussion about the artistic process.

“The enthusiasm and knowledge base of the staff was excellent.  The ability to adapt to the specific needs of the individual students was wonderful."
Linda K., 2007 Poetry, Prose and Paint Workshop Participant

Participants will work with acrylic paint; workshop materials are included in the registration fee.  Workshop classes will be held in the new Herbert H. and Barbara C. Dow Center for Visual Arts, The Writing House and throughout Interlochen's 1,200 acre wooded campus. The Dow Center for Visual Arts was completed in September 2008. The 35,900 square foot visual arts facility includes specialized studio space for a variety of visual arts disciplines. It also houses 1,700 square feet of  gallery space and 3,600 square feet of outdoor instructional space.
