Self-Portrait Drawing Workshop

Through an exploration of the classical tradition of portraiture from observation, students will be exposed to the methods utilized throughout history to create a portrait using drawing tools.

This course is an intensive introduction to creating a strong and emotional portrait through drawing. Through an exploration of the classical tradition of portraiture from observation, students will be exposed to the methods utilized throughout history to create a portrait.  Students will be introduced to the anatomical structures of the face as well as an abstract analysis of shape and tonal relationships. Particular attention will be places on the study of proportion and the understanding of value. Utilizing a variety of  drawing media and approaches students will learn to create a convincing likeness which conveys emotion. In this course the challenges of creating a portrait from direct live observation will be compared to working from photographic sources and the benefits of each will be explored.
