Join accomplished artist and educator Royce Deans for a three-day workshop on painting with the opaque watercolor medium of gouache. The initial focus will be on learning different methods of painting with this unique, quick-drying, water-based medium. Gouache may be applied in thick layers or thin washes, and layers of lighter colored paint can be applied on top of darker ones. These properties make gouache a versatile medium that allows artists to achieve a variety of effects. Simple still life set-ups will evolve into more complex subjects as the class discovers what can be achieved with gouache. Also included will be an exploration of the landscape and how its many features can be represented in this rich medium. Prior to making paintings, consideration of composition will be worked out by drawing in sketchbooks. In this way, each painter will more successfully communicate with the new artistic language they are developing. Painters of all skill levels are welcome, however some prior experience with drawing and painting is recommended. Faculty Royce Deans Instructor of Visual Arts, Interlochen College of Creative Arts Schedule Supplies Gouache is available in both tubes and in cakes, for this workshop we will be working with gouache that comes in tubes. This materials list has been provided as a guideline. All materials can be easily acquired at your local arts / craft store or online. Paint: Suggested colors include: Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow light, Cadmium Red medium, Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Olive Green, burnt umber, plus black and white gouache. Also a very economical set of gouache that performs quite well is the Artist Loft 12 tube set of gouache available at Michael’s. They also sell the Reeves brand, but the instructor has found that while they cost a little more than Artist Loft (Michael’s house brand) the Reeves paints are not as nice.
